What defenders should do today

Do today

  1. 1

Inventory every REDCap host, version, and published public survey

Record product, version, and whether a live public survey hash exists. CVE.org and Securifera: no login is required, but a published public survey hash is. CVE.org: 13.3.0 and later until Fixed in 16.0.49 LTS, Fixed in 17.3.10 LTS, or Fixed in 17.4.4 Standard.

    CVE.org CVE-2026-90817IONIX threat-center note

  2. 2

Upgrade to a listed fixed build

CVE.org: Fixed in 16.0.49 LTS, Fixed in 17.3.10 LTS, or Fixed in 17.4.4 Standard, or a later build that includes the fix. A public Vanderbilt advisory was not opened. An upgrade does not replace review if a public survey was reachable while the host was affected.

    IONIX threat-center note

  3. 3

If you cannot patch yet, restrict or disable public surveys

Securifera and IONIX: restrict or disable public surveys until the host is upgraded. Treat that as temporary containment, not a software fix.

    Securifera write-upIONIX threat-center note

  4. 4

If a public survey was reachable, hunt Unit 42 artefacts

Review web access logs for survey requests that also name a passthrough parameter and a DataImportController route. Review EDR for the web-server user spawning bash. Review new files under the REDCap temp/cache directory. Review outbound mining-pool traffic. Copy Unit 42 indicators only. Do not send crafted requests.

What the bug is

CVE-2026-90817 is an unauthenticated remote code execution issue in Vanderbilt University REDCap.

CVE-2026-90817 is an unauthenticated remote code execution issue in Vanderbilt University REDCap. The CVE.org CNA record (Securifera, published 20 Sep 2026 12:05 UTC, updated 21 Sep 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026) says: An unauthenticated Remote Code Execution vulnerability was found in the survey passthrough routing and Data Import processing logic, in which a malicious user could potentially exploit it by manipulating HTTP requests to access an unintended controller route from a public survey context and by supplying a crafted file-path/stream parameter during import handling. If successfully exploited, this could allow the attacker to remotely execute arbitrary code on the REDCap server. The attacker does not have to be authenticated in order to exploit this, but exploitation requires knowledge of a valid public survey hash. This vulnerability exists in REDCap 13.3.0 and higher.

The CNA is Securifera (contact@securifera.com; finder credit Ryan Wincey). The CVE.org affected list names Vanderbilt University REDCap 13.3.0 as affected and 16.0.49, 17.3.10, and 17.4.4 as unaffected. The same record's solution line is: Upgrade to REDCap 16.0.49 LTS, 17.3.10 LTS, or 17.4.4 Standard Release, as applicable. This page uses that CVE.org record for the version table. A public Vanderbilt REDCap advisory was not opened. IONIX (22 Sep 2026) restates the same LTS/Standard builds.

NVD republishes the CNA record (published 20 Sep 2026 13:17 UTC, lastModified 22 Sep 2026, status Awaiting Analysis, checked 1 Nov 2026) with a Secondary CVSS 3.1 9.8 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) and CWE-73 and CWE-94. NVD has no NVD-produced metric yet.

The Securifera advisories index (opened 1 Nov 2026) lists REDCap DataImport Remote Code Execution Vulnerability under CVE-2026-90817 and links the CVE.org record. The same index page also links the 27 Sep 2026 write-up. Securifera (b0yd, 27 Sep 2026) describes a public-survey passthrough that can reach an internal controller, then Data Import handling that writes attacker-selected bytes, which the application later executes. This page does not republish request bodies, filter chains, or exploit steps. Securifera scores CVSS 3.1 9.8 with the same vector.

Unit 42 (7 Oct 2026) reports in-the-wild use: a webshell via public survey endpoints, then fileless XMRig mining, with at least four live worker instances on pool data. Unit 42 also relays a REDCap statement that after learning of this vulnerability in September, REDCap released a software update addressing it within two days. That is a vendor patch-timing paraphrase, not a vendor confirmation or denial of in-the-wild use.

Exploitation status: reported exploited (Unit 42, 7 Oct 2026), not confirmed. Not in CISA KEV (catalog 2026.10.30, released 2026-10-30T17:02:45.3665Z, 1,766 entries, checked 1 Nov 2026). The NVD record includes a CISA Coordinator SSVC option exploitation: none dated 21 Sep 2026; that predates the Unit 42 note and is not a KEV listing.

Attack path

5 steps: Public survey hash, Passthrough reaches an internal controller, Data Import file or stream write, Code as the web user, Optional host follow-on

  1. Public survey hashNetwork access to a live published survey. NVD and Securifera: no login, but a valid public survey hash is required.
  2. Passthrough reaches an internal controllerNVD / Securifera: survey passthrough routing can reach a controller that was not meant to be public. Conceptual impact class only.
  3. Data Import file or stream writeNVD: a crafted file-path or stream parameter during import handling. Securifera: attacker-selected bytes are written. Conceptual impact class only.
  4. Code as the web userNVD: arbitrary code on the REDCap server. Securifera: the application later executes the written bytes. Unit 42: a transient webshell under the web-server account.
  5. Optional host follow-onUnit 42 (7 Oct 2026): in-memory XMRig mining after the webshell. Third-party report, not a vendor confirmation.

Am I affected?

3 inventory checks: 1 version, 1 config, 1 exposure search

The CVE.org CNA record names REDCap 13.3.0 and later as affected until 16.0.49 LTS, 17.3.10 LTS, or 17.4.4 Standard. A published public survey hash is a precondition. A public Vanderbilt advisory was not opened.

  • Record the installed REDCap version against the CVE.org CNA fixed builds

    Version

CVE.org and IONIX: 13.3.0 and later are affected until 16.0.49, 17.3.10, or 17.4.4. No public CLI version string was copied from a Vanderbilt advisory in this pass. See Detection for the ctsit host version check.

Record the installed REDCap version from the redcap_vX.Y.Z directory name on the host, or from the product's own version display, and compare it to 16.0.49 LTS, 17.3.10 LTS, and 17.4.4 Standard.
    Affected
The installed version is 13.3.0 or later and is not 16.0.49 LTS, 17.3.10 LTS, 17.4.4 Standard, or a later build that includes the fix.
    Fixed or out of scope
The installed version is 16.0.49 LTS, 17.3.10 LTS, 17.4.4 Standard, or a later build that includes the fix.

This is inventory only. Fixed builds come from the CVE.org CNA record. Do not send crafted requests.

  • Record whether a published public survey hash exists

    Config

NVD and Securifera: exploitation requires knowledge of a valid public survey hash. On each host, record whether any project has a live published public survey (the s= parameter). Do not collect or publish those hashes.

On each REDCap host, record whether any project has a live published public survey. Do not probe the survey URL with extra parameters.
    Affected
An affected version is installed and at least one public survey is published.
    Fixed or out of scope
No public survey is published, or the host is on a listed fixed build.

A published survey is a precondition, not proof of compromise.

  • Scoped product-fingerprint search for your own ranges

    Exposure search

Scoped Shodan title search for REDCap in your own ranges. Product fingerprint only, not a vulnerable count. See Detection for the Nuclei metadata source.

    shodan search 'http.title:"REDCap" net:<your-range>'
    Affected
A host in your range matches the REDCap title fingerprint and is on 13.3.0 or later without a listed fix, with a published public survey.
    Fixed or out of scope
No matching host in your range, or every match is on a listed fixed build or has no published public survey.

Fingerprint only. Do not treat a title hit as proof of this CVE.

Limits

  • A public Vanderbilt advisory was not opened.
  • Fixed builds come from the CVE.org CNA record (Securifera). IONIX restates the same LTS/Standard builds.
  • The Shodan fingerprint is a product title match, not a vendor inventory command.
  • Do not invent extra internet-search queries.

Can't patch yet?

1 published workaround

Securifera and IONIX document a workaround: restrict or disable public surveys until the host is upgraded. That is not a vendor advisory. The software fix is a listed fixed build.

  • Restrict or disable public surveys

Securifera (27 Sep 2026): if an immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict or disable public surveys. IONIX (22 Sep 2026) repeats the same step. This reduces exposure of the survey-hash precondition.

Limits. Not a software fix. Still upgrade to 16.0.49 LTS, 17.3.10 LTS, or 17.4.4 Standard. Disabling public surveys can interrupt legitimate data collection. A public Vanderbilt workaround list was not opened.

    Verify it is in place

No live public survey remains published on the host, or untrusted networks can no longer complete HTTPS to /surveys. Confirm in the product survey list and the edge firewall, then re-check after the next change window. Do not send crafted requests.

What a hit means

  • Attempt

A survey request that names DataImportController, or traffic from 202.61.130.221, with no matching host artefact.

  • Likely compromise

A Unit 42-named file or hash on a host that published a public survey while on 13.3.0 or later without a listed fix.

  • Compromise (your evidence)

Evidence that attacker-controlled code ran on the REDCap host. Unit 42 is a third-party report. Independent validation: not verified. This page records that as reported exploitation, not confirmed.

Next steps

  1. 1

Upgrade to a listed fixed build and restrict public surveys until you can

CVE.org CNA record: 16.0.49 LTS, 17.3.10 LTS, or 17.4.4 Standard. Securifera and IONIX: restrict or disable public surveys until then.

    IONIX threat-center note

  2. 2

Preserve copies and hashes of temp/cache files before restore

Keep the Unit 42-named path and any unexpected new files under temp/cache, plus their hashes, before upgrade or restore overwrites them.

    Unit 42 note

Limits

  • Lookback is a lower bound. Search only as far as your logs go; many SIEMs keep 30 to 90 days.
  • Unit 42 did not name a first calendar day of exploitation.
  • A public Vanderbilt advisory was not opened.
  • See Detection for the ctsit caveat on the .bladec suffix.
  • Extra IPs from one operator's scanner notes are not copied.

If you find a hit

3 containment steps, 1 rotation item, 2 persistence rows, 3 evidence items

Upgrade to a listed fixed build and restrict public surveys until you can. If a public survey was reachable while the host was affected, preserve web logs and temp/cache files, then hunt the Unit 42 INDICATORS. No vendor persistence bulletin was opened.

Containment

  1. 1

Restrict or disable public surveys if you cannot patch immediately

Securifera and IONIX: restrict or disable public surveys until the host is upgraded.

  2. 2

Upgrade REDCap to a listed fixed build

CVE.org CNA record: 16.0.49 LTS, 17.3.10 LTS, or 17.4.4 Standard. An upgrade does not replace review of logs and temp/cache from the affected period.

  3. 3

Hunt Unit 42 INDICATORS before trusting the host

Review the four structured INDICATORS (attacker IP, dropper SHA-256, webshell path, miner archive path) and the wallet string listed as an artefact. Third-party report. Independent validation: not verified.

Rotate

  • Credentials, API keys, and secrets the REDCap web process could reach

    General

General: if unauthenticated code execution succeeded, treat secrets on or behind the host as exposed. No CVE-2026-90817-specific rotate list was published in the sources we opened.

Observed behaviour

  • Webshell then fileless XMRig

Unit 42: a transient webshell under the web-server account, then an in-memory bash cradle that fetched a secondary payload and deployed XMRig. At least four live workers on pool data.

Path/var/tmp/.syslog-a224be51/xmrig.tar.gzUnit 42 INDICATORS: path for staged cryptocurrency miner archive.

Evidence to keep

  1. 1

Installed REDCap version string from before the upgrade

Preserve the redcap_vX.Y.Z directory name or the product version display so you can show whether the host was 13.3.0 or later while a public survey was published.

  2. 2

Web access logs for /surveys from 20 Sep 2026

Keep survey requests that also name DataImportController. No extra attacker IPs beyond the Unit 42 INDICATORS list.

  3. 3

Copies and hashes of unexpected temp/cache files

Keep the Unit 42-named path and any unexpected new files under temp/cache, plus SHA-256 hashes, from 20 Sep 2026 onward before restore or upgrade.

Limits

  • Unit 42 did not name a first calendar day of exploitation.
  • A public Vanderbilt advisory was not opened.
  • See Detection for the ctsit caveat on the .bladec suffix.
  • Extra IPs from one operator's scanner notes are not copied.
  • In-the-wild use is reported (Unit 42, 7 Oct 2026), not confirmed. Not in CISA KEV (checked 1 Nov 2026).

What is REDCap?

See What the bug is.

Which REDCap versions are affected?

Affected when a published public survey hash is known; CVE.org CNA record (Securifera) (20 Sep 2026) (1): REDCap 13.3.0 and later, until a listed fix.
