PHP2Shell (CVE-2026-109618 / CVE-2026-109619)

Shared component · php2shell

Two PHP core remote code execution bugs: CVE-2026-109618 (RCE via OOM corruption) and CVE-2026-109619 (RCE via stale global state). PHP scores both CVSS 4.0 9.2. Exploitation attempts are widely reported; no authoritative source confirms a successful in-the-wild compromise as of 2026-10-23. Neither CVE is in CISA KEV (catalog 2026.10.21).

What the bug is

PHP2Shell (also php2shell) is a public nickname from Wiz's exploit-script name; CISA, AWS, Ubuntu, Splunk and Cisco use it. PHP's own advisories do not. They name CVE-2026-109618 “RCE via OOM corruption” (GHSA-w8hw-w9fx-j79w) and CVE-2026-109619 “RCE via stale global state” (GHSA-6wmf-4rv5-p3rp), published 21 Oct 2026. This page follows PHP's GHSA CVE-to-bug mapping, not Wiz's table.

CVE-2026-109618 (CNA): PHP uses longjmp() for out-of-memory (OOM) errors to exit the current context and abort handling of the request. Some contexts may not properly account for this scenario and leave request memory in an uninitialized state before performing an allocation. The subsequent request cleanup procedure may read or branch on this memory. Multiple OOM strategies can consistently trigger this condition and lead to remote code execution (RCE).

CVE-2026-109619 (CNA): PHP has various global state that temporarily points into request memory. In some scenarios, global state may not be correctly reset, or may be repopulated after being reset. The global state may then refer to request memory even after it has been freed. Subsequent requests may read or branch on this stale state before it is fully initialized. Multiple strategies can trigger this condition and produce remote code execution (RCE). The CNA record also lists CAPEC-234.

The bugs sit in PHP core (Zend engine / SAPI request lifecycle; multipart/RFC1867 body parsing, session upload progress, error handling). This page uses PHP's GHSA mapping: session upload-progress is under CVE-2026-109619 (stale global state); CVE-2026-109618 is described as $_POST/multipart OOM corruption. Wiz's public table files some of those techniques under the other CVE. Treated here as an open discrepancy, not a resolved fact.

PHP describes Apache mod_php as highest risk (confirmed app-independent RCE before application code). PHP-FPM, php-cgi, FrankenPHP (likely susceptible for CVE-2026-109618 by source analysis), and LiteSpeed/LSAPI (conditional/unvalidated) are also discussed in the advisories, with varying confirmation. This is not an exploit recipe.

Fixed upstream branches announced 21 Oct 2026: 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, 8.2.35 (8.2 EOL 31 Dec 2026). The php.net ChangeLog lists those four releases as 22 Oct 2026. This page uses the 21 Oct news/GitHub date and records the ChangeLog difference as a note. PHP 8.1 and older no longer get updates from the PHP project; the security team provided minimal source backports for 7.4, 8.0 and 8.1 (no binaries).

Attack path

  1. RequestA network request reaches PHP (Zend engine / SAPI request lifecycle).
  2. OOM or stale stateCVE-2026-109618: an OOM abort can leave request memory uninitialized. CVE-2026-109619: global state may still refer to freed request memory.
  3. Memory corruptionLater request cleanup, or a later request on the same worker, may read or branch on that memory.
  4. Code execPHP's CNA records say this condition can lead to remote code execution. Conceptual impact class only.

High-level only. Not a reproduction guide.

What defenders should do today

  1. 01

    Patch PHP

    now

Patch to 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, or 8.2.35. PHP states updating is the only complete fix. Interim mitigations below are not complete.

    PHP advisory

  2. 02

End-of-life PHP, or you cannot patch

    now

CISA tells organisations on PHP 8.1 or earlier, or that cannot update, to take PHP systems offline. PHP 8.1 and older no longer get updates from the PHP project (source backports for 7.4/8.0/8.1 exist; see the open EOL note).

  3. 03

Find PHP you do not manage directly

    now

Look for PHP in appliances, NAS, hosting panels, containers, and CMS hosts. Check the downstream matrix below for your vendors. Treat “no statement yet” as unknown, not safe.

    Downstream matrix

  4. 04

    Restrict appliance management interfaces

    now

Until your vendor ships a fix, restrict management interfaces to trusted admin networks. Several appliance vendors in the downstream matrix give this as the interim control.

    Downstream matrix

  5. 05

Interim PHP mitigations are a bridge only

    soon

PHP lists, as incomplete bridges: memory_limit=-1 enforced administratively (CVE-2026-109618); low post_max_size; frontend limits on decoded size/parts/headers/nesting; do not use RLIMIT_AS/RLIMIT_DATA; session.upload_progress.enabled=0 and restart workers (CVE-2026-109619 session path); PHP 8.5 fatal_error_backtraces=0 (CVE-2026-109619 backtrace path); remove per-request INI that emits diagnostics; fix attacker-reachable fatal errors/timeouts.

  6. 06

Turn on WAF / IPS PHP2Shell signatures

    soon

Enable your WAF or IPS vendor's PHP2Shell signatures. Signature IDs stay in Detection.

  8. 08

    Use your distro's PHP packages

    now

On Ubuntu and other Linux distributions, apply the distro PHP packages, not a one-off upstream build, unless your vendor says otherwise.

"The previous update (October 22 16:18 UTC) reported that Sophos observed successful exploitation of PHP2Shell in customer environments. Upon further analysis, we are correcting that assessment as Sophos customer telemetry shows scanning and a small number of failed exploitation attempts. As of this update, there is no evidence of a successful compromise due to these vulnerabilities." https://t.co/BC5caSSSiR

    @calif_io

Let’s set the record straight: @lcfr_hax was the first to discover php2shell and develop a working exploit. See his August 5 tweet: https://t.co/I88EQFrUHa His work convinced the PHP Foundation to invest in fixing this entire bug class. He then worked around the clock to review, test, and retest the patches.
